Making Your Home Sustainable

Sustainable homes are attracting buyers. Good news is that there are a number of ways to improve durability and home efficiency.  Electric charging stations, low-flow toilets, and multi-pane windows are just a few examples that make today’s home buyers take a second look.  This trend isn’t just for millennials, almost everyone is looking to remove toxins from their home, save money and energy, and reduce water consumption.

Here are some tips to make your home more sustainable.

1.       Size. Focus only on what is needed for your family without sacrificing usefulness.

2.       Local Resources. Use locally sourced products that don’t require overseas delivery. Another plus is having a local supplier available for returns and fixes.

3.       Heating and Insulation.  Poorly insulated windows can cause an increase in bills, especially during the colder months. Replace these with multi-pane windows or put caulking around gaps.  It’s also a good idea to put extra insulation in the attic and basement areas.

4.       Energy. Energy audits can be useful in gauging your home’s systems.  Solar panels are becoming more of an affordable option, but if you aren’t a fan of the look, opt for light-colored shingles that retain less heat.

5.       Plumbing. Front-loading washing machines, low-flow toilets, showerheads, and tankless water heaters are great options to reduce money going down the drain. When shopping around, look for companies that offer rebates for buying energy saving appliances.

Whether you live in an existing home or are looking to build, follow these simple conservation tips to reduce energy and save money. Turn off lights when not using the room, don’t let the water run while brushing teeth, and unplug appliances when not in use.  If you are looking to renovate, make sure you ask if your builder has knowledge in sustainable home building.
